Periodle

What is Periodle?

Periodle is a Wordle-inspired word-guessing game. Instead of identifying a 5-letter word made up of any letter from A to Z, you must predict a word made up of 5 elements from the periodic table ranging from Hydrogen to Oganesson. Words can thus range in length from 5 to 10 letters, as long as they can be spelled using periodic table elements and are legitimate English words.

Every day, there is one word to guess that is the same for everyone who is playing that day. This game, like some of my previous projects, operates on German time, which may differ from your time zone. Words may not change at midnight, but everyone hears the same word at any moment.

The word to guess is picked from a manually curated collection of over 1000 words ranging in length from 6 to 10 letters. 5-letter words were not permitted.

Rules of the Game

If you already know how to play Wordle, go to the part below under "What are orange letters?"

Every day, you get eight chances to guess a word, and each time you do, the elements turn gray, orange, yellow, or green. The solution contains no gray parts. If an element shows yellow, it is in the solution but in a different position. If an element turns green, it is in the solution and in the correct place. When you successfully guess the word, all letters turn green.

In this situation, the solution is S P Ra Y Er. Because carbon and oxygen are not present in the solution, the guess C O P P Er appears gray. The solution contains phosphorus, but in a different form; the first appears yellow. Because there is only one phosphor in the solution, the second phosphor appears gray. Erbium, on the other hand, is positioned correctly and hence appears green.

Please take in mind that these colors may differ if you change the color theme. This description does not presently adapt to the color scheme.
